無 Mu — The Void Kanji

無 — Mu. Void. Nothingness. Without.

What it means

無 is a negation — the character Japanese uses to say without. Placed before another word, it removes: 無限 (mugen) is "without limit" — infinite. On its own, it points at nothingness itself. Not emptiness as lack — emptiness as space.

Where it comes from

無 carries centuries of Zen weight. In the most famous koan in the tradition, a monk asks master Zhaozhou whether a dog has Buddha-nature. The answer: 無. Not yes, not no — a refusal of the question's frame. Generations of Zen students have sat with that single character. It is one of the heaviest one-syllable words in any language.

Why we print it

The same idea runs through Japanese aesthetics as negative space — what you leave out shapes what remains. That is the Shinsei design brief in one character. No excess. Just presence.
